Artist Statement
My work explores what identity means regarding age, gender, expectations, and the human condition. Portraying abstract self portraits, images disappear and reappear alongside the physical and metaphysical world. These images are ever changing and take on various forms and spaces that mirror my confusion of self as I interact and move through the world.
I work with acrylic, oil, charcoal and pastels on large canvases to allow my body to move freely around the surface and expand my range of textures and mark making. My paintings go through various stages, sometimes transforming into completely new images until they feel right. By tuning myself completely out and working directly on impulse, I leave the remains of my energy and state of mind behind, aiming to share this guttural experience with the viewer. I know my paintings are finished when I feel there is a connection between myself and the painting whether it is from a deep feeling or personal meaning. Most often, my work projects my biggest insecurities, worst traumas, my alter egos, and deepest desires.
